Liberty 35, Sam Houston 3: A Winning Pick, an Overestimated Visitor

Liberty -13.5 won comfortably, but SE v3.0 overestimated Sam Houston’s scoring. An honest review of the original forecast and a 35–3 final.

Liberty made the spread decision look easy. Making an honest assessment of the prediction takes a little more work. The Flames beat Sam Houston 35–3 on Thursday, covering the South Ark Daily Picks selection of Liberty -13.5. The home side justified the model’s direction, while the visiting score exposed a substantial forecasting miss.

That is exactly why we save the numbers before kickoff. A green result should not turn every assumption into a success. The pick won. The projection did not fully capture how little Sam Houston would score. Both statements can sit beside each other without diminishing the result.

A game controlled on the ground

Sam Houston’s official recap reports Liberty rushed for 297 yards and held the Bearkats below 300 total yards. The quarter-by-quarter scoring shows the Flames ahead 14–3 at halftime and adding 21 unanswered points after the break. Liberty improved to 5–1 overall and 2–0 in Conference USA. Sam Houston fell to 1–4 and 0–1.

Those facts describe sustained separation rather than a single late score inflating an otherwise close game. The visitor’s three points were all it managed. A defense that can keep an opponent from answering gives its own offense room to establish pace, keep running and avoid chasing the scoreboard.

The forecast did enough for the spread

At publication, SE v3.0 projected Liberty 38.64 and Sam Houston 19.03. The expected margin was 19.61, against the locked -13.5 handicap. That left a 6.11-point edge toward Liberty. The saved FanDuel price was -110, and the pick was published at 1:25 p.m. Central on October 8, well before the scheduled 6 p.m. Central kickoff.

The actual 32-point margin beat the handicap by 18.5. The official grade is a win. We are not using a different sportsbook, a later price or a closing spread to improve that grade. The original number was sufficient.

But the score comparison tells a less flattering story about the visitor. Liberty finished 3.64 points below the model’s estimate. Sam Houston finished 16.03 below its estimate. The projected total was 57.67, against an actual 38. The model underestimated the margin by 12.39 and overestimated the total by 19.67.

Why the wrong score can accompany the right side

A spread is a statement about the difference between two scores. A total is a statement about their sum. When one team underperforms its scoring estimate much more than the other, the favorite can cover while the game finishes substantially lower than forecast. That is what the arithmetic shows here. It does not mean we had an official under selection waiting in reserve.

The production model uses both teams’ prior profiles, with missing observations handled through disclosed baseline priors. It accounts for offensive and defensive efficiency, pace, conversion opportunities, turnovers and site. It does not have a verified injury adjustment, and its saved forecast is not a possession-by-possession simulation.

The available evidence does not justify attributing the entire miss to quarterback play, turnovers or red-zone execution. Those require their own verified observations. Nor can we say the regression anticipated the exact rushing performance. Our narrower conclusion is that it identified a home-side margin advantage, while the visiting scoring estimate proved too optimistic.

What deserves a closer look

The useful follow-up is to compare similar opponent-scoring misses across multiple games. If the model repeatedly gives weak visiting offenses too much credit against stronger defenses, that could indicate a systematic weakness. If the error is isolated, it may be ordinary football variation. One comfortable cover cannot answer the question.

Any challenger model should be evaluated chronologically on games it did not train on. Changing weights to fit Thursday’s final would make the recap look clever and the next forecast less trustworthy. The original prediction stays frozen; the result enters the record as evidence.

A win worth keeping exactly as it happened

Liberty -13.5 is now part of the verified published results. No stake size is documented, so we are not presenting hypothetical returns as actual units or ROI. The site preserves the price because future audited evaluation needs it, not because the price proves a wager was placed.

Read the WKU recap for a different kind of cover, and the UTSA review for a reminder that a winning margin can be far less comfortable than the forecast suggests.
